As organisation, why can ReFood call itself sustainable?

ReFood uses only organic materials that are no longer used in the food industry such as uneaten fries from the restaurant or supermarket yoghurt that has passed its use-by date. We don’t consider this kind of waste as waste - it’s a really valuable raw material. ReFood converts such waste into sustainable energy.

In this demanding market, ReFood is ready for the future and is a reliable partner in the production of CO2-neutral energy.

Refood Duurzame elektriciteit

Green electricity

ReFood uses the sustainable electricity generated from biogas in its own production processes as well as supplying this to the national grid. The energy from 70 food waste containers covers the annual electricity consumption of an average household (3,500 kWh) and provides savings of around 200 tonnes in CO2.

Refood Milieuvriendelijke warmte

Environmentally-friendly heat

Generating electricity in the cogeneration unit produces both electricity and heat. ReFood uses the heat released from a cogeneration unit to heat the food waste for fertiliser processing at 45 degrees Celsius. This heat is also used for the hot water used in the container washing station, the daily cleaning of vehicles and to heat the offices and canteens. Neighbouring businesses also use the heat for their production processes.

Refood Organische bemesting

Organic fertiliser

In the range of mineral fertilisers, our digestate (biomass left over after fermentation) is of very high quality and therefore extremely sustainable. For the production of our high-quality NPK fertiliser, DynAgro, no additional sources of energy or rare raw materials, such as phosphorus, are used. Using DynAgro closes the food chain and gives important nutrients back to nature.

Refood Grondstof voor biodiesel

Raw material for biodiesel

In addition to food waste, used frying oils and fats from the hospitality and food industries form part of the ReFood collection package. As well as the used edible oils that the company extracts from food waste, ReFood also collects used frying oils and fats as sustainable raw material for biodiesel producers.

Our sister company ecoMotion produces climate-friendly fuel from this. These belong to the so-called 2nd generation biofuels, based on residues.

Climate-neutral television

The energy from a small Culino container can run a TV in a climate-neutral way 24 hours a day for a week (27 kWh).  Read more
